Lafayette Parish School Board member for District 6,  Justin Centanni, spoke with Rob and Bernie on Acadiana Morning News to give his thoughts on the naming discussion and the board's goals for the name of the new Lafayette parish high school.

I think it’s great that everyone’s so passionate about the school name. We have the citizens and residents of Youngsville advocating for Youngsville, and the city council of Youngsville passed a resolution and forwarded it to us for the school to be named Youngsville High. We also have the residents of Broussard who are very passionate and want the name to reflect that the children of Broussard will be attending as well.

Think back a year ago, the conversation we were having about the school board was very negative, and now we're building a new school where 2, 000 children will be able to go. We’re going to take a chunk of students out of Comeaux High School, the 9th largest high school in the state, and put them in a new, modern, 21st century high school. In the grand scheme of things, this is a great problem to have.

Centanni also detailed how to process will proceed now that the final 4 names have been selected

The next step is that Sandra [Billeaudeau, Lafayette Parish Schools planning director] will take the 4 names to students at Comeaux who are zoned for the school. They will vote for the name and more importantly, the mascot and the colors.

We should remind everyone that we had these small high schools in the individual municipalities in the past, and when we combined them we didn’t name them after a city, we named it Comeaux, we named it Acadiana High.

After the kids get their say, it’s going to go back to this committee who chose the four names and they’re going to take the kids input into accont and then they’re going to vote on their top two. And then in the school board, majority wins.
