With Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, the mockumentary comes full circle.

Though the concept of a “fake documentary” existed before, the form really came into its own with the classic mock-rock-doc This Is Spinal Tap, which chronicled the sad, slow decline of England’s loudest band. That film featured comedy superstars (and former and future Saturday Night Live cast members) Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer, which suggests even more parallels to Popstar, the new film from SNL Digital Shorts heroes Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone, aka the Lonely Island. In this film, Samberg plays Conner4Real, a Justin Bieber-type living in a fantasy world of wealth and awesomeness. (In my favorite gag in the trailer, he throws a no-look shot at a basket, airballs it, and his sycophants all act like it went in.) But then, like Spinal Tap, it all comes crashing down.

Also like Spinal TapPopstar has an insanely deep bench of supporting actors; in the trailer alone you’ll see Will Forte, Tim Meadows, Sarah Silverman, Bill Hader, Will Arnett, and America’s favorite funny man, Martin Sheen. You’ve also got Judd Apatow working behind the scenes as producer. (I guess in my analogy, he’d be the Rob Reiner of the group.) Here’s the official plot synopsis:

Universal Pictures’ Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is headlined by musical digital-shorts superstars Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone, collectively known as The Lonely Island. The comedy goes behind the scenes as singer/rapper Conner4Real (Samberg) faces a crisis of popularity after his sophomore album flops, leaving his fans, sycophants and rivals all wondering what to do when he’s no longer the dopest star of all.

Based on this trailer, I would say the potential for the movie to be dope is very high. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping opens in theaters on June 3.
