Its a hot topic around the country and now its coming to downtown Lafayette, the removal of confederate statues.

Several groups have planned a gathering for Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. to call for the removal of the General Alfred Mouton statue in downtown Lafayette.

One group, "Move The Mindest," says that the statue represents one side of history and that they want it to be relocated. The spokesperson for the group told KATC that they don't want it destroyed, they simply want it to be relocated.

He suggested that the statue, which was erected in the 1920s, be relocated into a museum, just not on public grounds for viewing.

The Gen. Mouton statue is located at the intersection of Lee Avenue and Jefferson Street in downtown Lafayette.

We should note here that its been a little over a year since the Lafayette City-Parish decided to not take action in the removal process. At the time they cited legal issues.
