New Orleans Saints running back C.J. Spiller underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Friday, according to an ESPN report.

Spiller, who signed a free agent deal with the Saints this offseason after spending the first 5 year of his career with the Buffalo Bills, is expected to be back from the minor surgery in time to suit up for the regular season opener in Arizona on September 13th.

At 28 years old, New Orleans is hoping he can be a homerun threat on each play. With his elite speed and athleticism, a healthy Spiller can add a valuable dimension to the Saints offense as a runner and a receiver out the backfield. He's also displayed top level talent in the return game of special teams.

Saints head coach Sean Payton was asked about Spiller's surgery on Saturday, but only responded that he had not read the report, electing to not give any details.

Without Spiller, the Saints running back depth chart is currently led by Mark Ingram, Khiry Robinson and veteran Tim Hightower.
