Former Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan claims that the they weren't running his scheme the last two years that he was there.

Ryan is now a defensive assistant for his twin brother Rex's team in Buffalo.

On his time in New Orleans, where the Saints were ranked as the number four defense in the league his first season there, Ryan had this to say:

“I need to be in a multiple system. I was hired to be in a multiple system in New Orleans,” Ryan said. “I did a damn good job and got fired for it.”

The last two years he was there, the Saints were dead last, not only for the year, but most likely all time in the league.

Ryan claims that after the 2013 season (his first with the team), the Saints changed their defensive scheme to one that mirrored Seattle's.

“There are two years that don’t have my signature on them, and it’s the last two years in New Orleans,” Ryan said. “And that’s the truth.”

Turns out Sean Payton had something to say about that! He placed the blame on substitution, alignment, and defensive calling.

“The idea that it wasn’t his defense, or that he wasn’t in charge of it, is silly,” Payton said.

I'm trying to take my bias out of it, and just look at it like this. If it were truly the case that someone above him changed the scheme, and it was no longer his, then why is he just NOW saying that? Wouldn't that be one of the first things you tell the press?

Who do YOU believe?
