The Lafayette Police Department says that Halloween will be celebrated with "Trick or Treating" hours from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, October 31.

The most important part of Halloween is to have fun, but to do so with safety in mind.

Lafayette Police has the following safety tips for you and your family:

  • Choose costumes that are marked flame retardant and add reflective tape or reflectors to darker colored costumes.
  • All children should remain under the direct supervision of parents or guardians.
  • Carry a flashlight or other illuminant device.
  • Have children stay within their own familiar neighborhood and only visit homes they know.
  • Adults should inspect all candy prior to the children indulging.
  • Give and accept wrapped or packaged candy only.
  • Have props such as magic wands and swords constructed out of cardboard rather than metal or wood.  This will avoid unnecessary injuries.
  • Drive vehicles cautiously in areas where children are trick or treating.

On Halloween night, it's standard practice to leave your light on if you plan to hand out candy. If you are not going to hand out candy, turn your light off. If you are still concerned that you might get a knock on the door you can always put up a note.

A reminder that sex offenders are prohibited from doing the following:
