The New Orleans Saints' win streak improved to 8 games on Sunday.

The Saints, in come-from-behind fashion, defeated the Washington Redskins, 34-31, in overtime, at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

New Orleans trailed, 31-16, with under 6:00 left, before forcing the game into overtime, and then eventually getting the win, courtesy of a Wil Lutz 28-yard game-winning field goal.

The 15-point deficit is the largest that the Saints have ever overcome in the 4th quarter to win a game.

Since suffering a 36-20 setback to the New England Patriots in Week 2 of the 2017 NFL season, New Orleans has won 8-straight, to move to 8-2.

The 8-game win streak matches the longest for the Saints since the 2011 season, when they ended that season with 8-straight victories.

Washington got on the scoreboard first, at the 11:45 mark of the opening quarter, when Nick Rose capped off a 6-play, 27-yard drive with a 38-yard field goal, giving them a quick 3-0 lead.

New Orleans tied the game at the 5:35 mark of the opening frame, when Lutz kicked through a long 52-yard field goal, concluding an 11-play, 48-yard drive, to make it 3-3.

The Redskins regained the lead at the 2:11 mark of the second quarter, when Kirk Cousins connected with Chris Thompson on a 16-yard touchdown pass, ending a 7-play, 75-yard drive, giving them a 10-3 advantage.

Washington grabbed the lead back at the 10:44 mark of the second quarter, when Samaje Perine scored on a short 1-yard touchdown plunge, wrapping up a 9-play, 75-yard drive, to give them a 17-10 edge.

New Orleans scored the last points of the half, with only :05 left, when Lutz made good on his second field goal of the half, this one from 29 yards away, to trim the deficit to 17-13, a score that would hold as the two teams went into their respective locker rooms at halftime.

The Redskins outgained the Saints, in terms of total first half yards, 222-218, including and 86-70 advantage in rushing yards, while the Saints held a 153-147 edge in passing yards.

As they did in the first half, the Redskins scored the first points of the second half, when Cousins tossed his second touchdown pass of the game, this one from 40 yards out to Ryan Grant, capping off a long 12-play, 94-yard drive, to extend their lead to 24-13 with 1:37 remaining in the third quarter.

The Saints scored their first points of the second half at the 9:24 mark of the final quarter, when Lutz converted on his third field goal of the game, this one from 42 yards out, culminating a 5-play, 27-yard drive, to get to within 8 points, 24-16.

Washington added to their lead with 5:58 left, when Cousins hit Jeremy Sprinkle with a short 7-yard scoring strike, his third touchdown toss of the contest, ending a 6-play, 75-yard drive, to make it 31-16.

New Orleans, refusing to give up, scored the last points of the game with 2:53 remaining, when Brees threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Josh Hill, wrapping up an 8-play, 75-yard drive, to make it a one-score game, 31-23.

The Saints got the football back with 1:53 left, with a chance to tie, and did just that, when Brees connected with Alvin Kamara on an 18-yard touchdown pass, concluding a 4-play, 82yard drive, with 1:05 left, to make it, 31-29, before Kamara ran in a two-point conversion, to tie the score, 31-31.

Washington was able to drive down to the New Orleans 31-yard line, but an intentional grounding penalty took them out of field goal range, and forced the game into overtime.

The Saints, after forcing the Redskins to go three-and-out on the initial possession of the overtime, marched down the field on their first possession, going 51 yards on 3 plays, setting up the game-winning 28-yard field goal by Lutz, to secure the win.
