The New Orleans Saints trimmed their roster down to 75 today as mandated by the NFL. Several veterans were released, while young players who never panned out hit the waiver wire.

Fullback Erik Lorig was a free agent signee a season ago, but after suffering an injury in training camp, Austin Johnson slid into the starting role. Johnson suffered an injury during the season around the same time Lorig returned to the field.

However, through training camp and the preseason, Johnson solidified himself as the number one fullback on the roster.

Wide receiver Nick Toon is was waived today with an injury designation. After being drafted out of Wisconsin in the 4th round of the 2012 draft, Toon never blossomed into the promising receiver many had hoped. After a rookie season spent on IR (injured reserve), Toon reeled in 21 catches for 238 yards a 1 touchdown over the last two seasons. He has dealt with an ankle injury the last week and no taken part in training since suffering it.

Second year safety Vinnie Sunseri was waived with an injury designation, as was linebacker Ronald Powell. The linebacker out of Florida was a 5th round draft pick and Sunseri out of Alabama in the 4th round.

Sean Payton noted that Toon, Sunseri and Powell could all possibly return to the team if they clear waivers with an injury designation.

Veteran linebacker/defensive end Anthony Spencer was placed on IR, as was rookie CB P.J. Williams who was drafted in the 3rd round back in May.

Former Louisiana Ragin' Cajun linebacker Justin Anderson survived the first round of cuts, leaving him a chance to impress the staff in Thursday's preseason finale.

Joining Lorig, Toon, and Powell among today's cuts are the following: WR Lance Lewis, DE Markus Pierce-Brewster, CB Terrence Frederick, WR R.J. Harris, LB Chris Young, DT David Hunter, OL Cole Manhart and CB Travis Manning.

Following Thursday's preseason finale in Green Bay, the Saints will have to cut their roster down to 53 for the regular season by 3:00pm on Saturday.
