New Orleans Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson reached a settlement with his daughter and grandchildren in the legal fight over future ownership of the teams, both franchises announced today.

The legal battle between Benson and his estranged family members over shares, trust funds, and control of the Saints and Pelicans following Benson's death was scheduled to go to trial on Monday.

Had it reached trial, Benson, 88, would have been forced to testify. In addition, the financial records of the Saints, Pelicans and Benson would have been made public.

The following statement was released by on both the Saints and Pelicans website regarding today's settlement:

It was announced today that terms of a settlement have been reached by Tom Benson and the trustees. Terms will remain confidential.

The parties have informed the National Football League and the National Basketball Association of the terms related to the framework of the settlement. Operations for all Tom Benson business properties including the New Orleans Saints, the New Orleans Pelicans, WVUE-FOX 8, automotive dealerships and Benson Tower remain “business as usual.”

With terms being kept private, it is currently unclear who will control each franchise upon Benson's death.

A year and a half ago, a public rift between Benson and his daughter, granddaughter and grandson began when he announced his intent to leave ownership of the Saints and Pelicans to his current wife Gayle after he passes away.
