After an intriguing three days in New York City filled with workshops, a music showcase and a killer performance from Janelle Monae, HBO’s Bessie 81 Theater Tour moved on to the West Coast to take over Los Angeles just days before Bessie premieres.

Following a private dinner with more than 50 influencers, the Los Angeles leg of the tour concluded on Thursday (May 14) with a surprise performance by Solange. In addition to her set at the Millwick in Downtown L.A., party-goers were also treated to a dance-inducing set from DJ D-Nice and a preceding acoustic-turned a cappella performance from singer-songwriter Stacey Barthe.

Solange looked stylish and confident in a flared red asymmetrical crop top and high-waist white pants. She was backed by a four-piece band as she hit the stage around 10:40 p.m. and her energy was immediately felt by the crowd, who was drawn to her vibrant performance of  “Losing You” and other jams from her 2012 EP, True. Solange even busted out a few dance moves of her own, which were matched by those in the audience including actresses Tika Sumpter (Ride Along), Maya Lewis (Scandal) and Adrienne-Joi Johnson (Baby Boy).

What a way to pay homage to Bessie Smith. HBO's Bessie, starring Queen Latifah, airs at 8PM EST on May 16.
