High temperatures and even higher heat indices are not uncommon in Louisiana during July. The extremely high temperatures and excessively high indices over the past few days have state officials issuing advisories and urging caution for residents who have to be out in the heat.

The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness' Executive Director Jim Waskom says his office is monitoring the heatwave and how to better prepare and inform Louisiana residents of the dangers of excessive heat.

If you’re outdoors, you need to limit your strenuous outdoor activity, find some shade and just stay hydrated and continue to pump those fluids.

Waskom's comments to the Louisiana Radio Network are good advice for anyone who has to be out of doors especially during the heat of the day. He also suggested that this weather event is not only about taking care of yourself it's about taking care of others too.

If you’re indoors we worry about the elderly without air conditioning, so if you have a friend or family member that may be in that situation we advise you to go check on them periodically.

The dangers of the heat are just confined to the home either. Waskom reminds residents to "Look Before You Lock".

Especially with children and pets, obviously don’t forget about them. Always check your back seat to ensure that you don’t forget about any.

The excessive temperatures and higher than average heat indices are expected to continue through at least the weekend. The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories for many parts of the state for the next 24 to 48 hours.
