Four different traffic stops along I-10 in recent weeks netted more than 1,000 pounds of drugs worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Trooper Jared Sandifer with Louisiana State Police said multiple arrests were made and more than a ton of marijuana and cocaine, along with thousands of ecstasy pills, were seized.

"On one of the stops, the guy had over 580 pounds of marijuana in his vehicle," Sandifer said. "In another stop a guy had about 244 pounds of marijuana, over a kilo of cocaine and 10,000 Ecstasy pills."

Sandifer said during a Feb. 26 traffic stop in West Baton Rouge Parish, troopers found about 11 pounds of cocaine, two handguns and $10,000 cash.

In the same parish on March 21, Sandifer said, detectives stopped a man who had 11,000 ecstasy pills and more than 100 pounds of pot.

"That cocaine had about a $400,000 street value," Sandifer said. "And that MDMA was over $100,000."

Sandifer said a Texas man was pulled over on March 23 and more than 244 pounds of marijuana was discovered in his Mercedes. Then on March 24, troopers in St. Martin Parish stopped a man on the interstate who had 586 pounds of marijuana packed in bundles in his SUV.

Sandifer said I-10 is major drug corridor.

"A lot of it comes from Texas and goes out through other areas of the country," said Sandifer. "A lot of that has to come through Louisiana, and we're going to be on the lookout for that."
