One of Acadiana's parishes could be the site of the Louisiana's first commercial wind farm.

The point of the wind farm would be to generate energy from turbines.

Metairie company Southern State Renewable Energy's $40 million project includes eight 498-foot-tall wind turbines that would be placed on coastal land near the Port of West St. Mary.

St. Mary Parish Economic Development Director Frank Fink believes the project would give the parish an opportunity to branch out from conventional projects.

While Louisiana is not considered a prime are for wind-energy projects, Bill Gallardo of Southern State Renewable Energy, says that area of St. Mary parish has great potential.
