‘Straight Outta Compton’ Trailer Shows Promise

If you watched the Grammy Awards last night, then you likely saw a commercial for the N.W.A. biopic 'Straight Outta Compton.' The official trailer for the film can be summed up in one word: promising.

Before the trailer begins, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube head back to Compton, where they revisit some of their old stomping grounds. From hitting the barbershop to talk to Game to chilling with Kendrick Lamar outside Tam's Burgers (the location near the Suge Knight fatal hit-and-run occurred), they give some insight as to why the film was created.

The clip highlights the ups and downs N.W.A. experienced on their rise to the top. When the trailer kicks off, a young Dre argues with his mother about his lack of income -- a measly $50 is nowhere near being rich to her. Then you see him in the studio working with a pre-fame Eazy-E, played by Jason Mitchell.

Ice Cube's son, O'Shea Jackson Jr., stars as his dad and scores his first feature film acting gig with this role. He bears a striking resemblance to his father too. Based on the way he delivers his lines, chances are he'll play the role convincingly since he's also adopted Cube's manner of speech.

In addition, the clip shows the group's success and controversy with songs like 'F--- Tha Police.'

Respected actor Paul Giamatti plays the part of Jerry Heller, who managed N.W.A. and Eazy-E from the start. The trailer finds him informing the group that they're causing a national stir, are "f---in' huge" due to their album sales and have the federal government sending them threats.

"The world's most dangerous times created the world's most dangerous group," reads the Universal Pictures promo art for the film, which hits theaters Aug. 14. Watch the 'Straight Outta Compton' trailer to get a sneak peek into how their voices sparked a change.
