On any average Sunday night, Downtown Lafayette is usually quiet and recovering from the partying over the weekend. However, with Mardi Gras weekend upon us, Jefferson Street had no chance to rest this past Sunday night. The Greenroom in downtown Lafayette hosted it's annual masquerade ball and this year the brass band Soul Express took to the streets of the entertainment district.

As we enter into Mardi Gras weekend in South Louisiana, we often remind ourselves of the two different type Mardi Gras celebrations in Acadiana and in South Louisiana. In the smaller communities of Acadiana, the Courir De Mardi Gras is the choice of celebration when it comes to Mardi Gras celebrations. However, in the larger cities like Lafayette and New Orleans Mardi Gras does NOT resemble the Courir De Mardi Gras. If you have ever attended the two separate celebrations, you know that Mardi Gras is different in the countryside than it is in the city.
Okay Acadiana, you've been been patient long enough. It's all about to get started. Just a few more hours left before the streets of Lafayette transform into festival ground zero.
Mardi Gras is a celebration of decadence. It is a holiday of fun, excitement, and individuality. During Mardi Gras, social norms fly out the window and a laissez faire attitude prevails just about everywhere.
You can almost smell the king cake in the air. It's early spring in Acadiana and for just about everyone, this means one thing; Mardi Gras.
