MTV released the nominations for this year's Video Music Awards on Tuesday (July 26), with Kanye West, Drake, Desiigner, Bryson Tiller, Chance The Rapper and 2 Chainz all receiving nods. Absent, however, is Taylor Swift, who in the past eight years has won six VMA moonmen, most famously in 2009 when she won Best Female Video for "You Belong with Me" and was subsequently interrupted by Kanye West, who had some disagreements to air.

Considering Swift was nominated eight times last year for "Black Space" and "Bad Blood" and took home Video of the Year, the omissions are particularly curious, even if her last release, 1989, came out in 2014. Swift has released two videos in 2016 however, "Out of the Woods" and "New Romantics," so eligibility shouldn't have been the issue. Instead, there is the notion that the pass overs are a result of the backlash against Swift that Kim Kardashian initiated by releasing a video in which the singer is informed of Kanye's "Famous" lyrics that reference her.

The 2016 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from Madison Square Garden on Sun., Aug. 28 at 9 p.m. EST. Drizzy is nominated for five awards — Video of the Year, Best Male Video, Best Hip-Hop Video, Best Art Direction (“Hotline Bling”) and Best Female Video (“Work” with Rihanna). Desiigner is up for Best Hip-Hop Video (“Panda”) and Best New Artist while Kanye is nominated for Best Male Video and Video of the Year for his polarizing “Famous” visual.
