Timbaland opens up about his battle with drug addiction and depression. The super producer admits he battled a heavy drug addiction over the years, but a near-fatal overdose put him back into perspective to get clean.

During an interview with Rolling Stone, he shares the story of what happened when he became addicted to OxyContin, and how it almost took his life.

He shares that he woke up from the experience like he was "underwater" and his breathing was impaired. He also said that he thought about Michael Jackson, and the impact that drugs had on the late pop star.

“All I can tell you is that there was a light," he confesses. "I woke up trying to catch my breath, like I was underwater. But through that whole thing I saw life – I saw where I would be if I don’t change, and where I could be if I did…I thought about Michael Jackson. I didn’t want to be old and taking these pills.”

Timbo also reveals the words of advice from longtime collaborator JAY-Z, who showed grave concern for the veteran hitmaker's drug habit.

“Music is a gift and curse,” he continues. “Once you’re not popping, it plays with your mind. The pills helped block out the noise—I’d just sleep all day. I remember Jay-Z told me one time, ‘Don’t do no more interviews’—because I was saying crazy shit.”

After the near-fatal overdose shocked his mindset, Timbaland sought to get clean, weening himself off the pills, eventually cutting them out altogether. These days, he does smoke weed and drinks alcohol.

At the moment, the producer is working on new music including collabos with Justin Timberlake, Rick Ross and even Ski Mask The Slump God.
