UL Student Newspaper Weighs In On Name Debate With Satire Piece

After the Monroe News-Star stoked the flame when it published an article accusing the University of Louisiana at Lafayette of law-breaking through its athletic branding, the university’s student-run newspaper ran a snarky satire piece — featuring faked quotes from students, UL Lafayette President Joe Savoie and UL System President Sandra Woodley — in response.

From thevermilion.com:

Accustomed to the lesser university’s incessant nagging, the University of Louisiana — which is, in fact, formally named the University of Louisiana at Lafayette — also offered ULM condolences for “its failure to bring its city an ounce of the pride bearded redneck reality stars do.”

According to a news release, University of Louisiana President E. Joseph Savoie, Ed.D.,  dismissed the noise from the north, as well, remarking that it “sucks to suck” before announcing that he was “done discussing such trivial matters.”

The piece is another in response to the ongoing controversy about whether UL Lafayette’s Ragin’ Cajuns can legally brand themselves as such, according to a UL System policy that requires use of “University of Louisiana” is followed by its geographic signifier. UL System President Sandra Woodley noted the policy makes no restriction on the standalone use of “Louisiana.”
