Zanessa, the ultimate Disney dream couple composed of heartthrob Zac Efron and sweetheart Vanessa Hudgens, is no longer a thing despite how perfect these two seemed together. But at least now we kind of know why.

In a new interview with The New York Times, Vanessa — who is preparing to make her Broadway debut in a revival of Gigi — spoke briefly about the downside of the romance.

"I went through a phase when I was really mean because I was so fed up," Vanessa recalled, referencing the fervor surrounding the High School Musical series, in which both Hudgens and Efron starred. "Girls were running after him, and I was giving them death stares. Then I realized that’s not what that’s about. Spread the love, be a good person, they support you, be nice."

Fortunately, Vanessa is in a long-term relationship with Austin Butler, whom you might remember from The Carrie Diaries. The pair seems very serious and happy and have managed to fly under the radar, at least in comparison to the often-photographed Zanessa.

Vanessa opened up about her relationship with Austin as well — she even told the Times that he reintroduced her to her Christian faith.

It looks like any hope for a Zanessa reunion is off the table, but because Vanessa seems truly happy with Austin and all good things must come to an end, we've embraced the idea that one of the most iconic on-screen/off-screen couples of our time will only live on via the High School Musical franchise. We're all in this together.
