When you’re loading up kids with sugar as they trick-or-treat this Halloween, may we recommend one candy over all others?

According to 24/7 Wall Street, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups were the bestselling candy in 2012, tallying a gut-busting, acne-causing, cavity-forming $509.85 million. That topped M&Ms, which finished in second, with a stellar $500.82 million.

It should come as no surprise chocolate dominates the list. Research has found that Americans coughed up nearly $4 billion to buy three-and-a-half BILLION chocolate products under three-and-a-half ounces over the last four years. And that number is amplified during Halloween -- about three-quarters all money spent on candy this Halloween goes towards chocolate. In 2012, that number was $12.6 billion.

When it comes to who is eating candy on Halloween, it should come as no surprise that kids lead the way. One study estimates that children will eat four pieces of candy for every one gobbled up adults.

Those youngsters between the ages of 6 and 8 are the most likely to enjoy sweet treats, with 87% of them eating candy on Halloween.
