[Updated 0200 AM CST] Officials in St. Mary Parish are now reporting that all lanes of travel on U.S. Highway 90 are open to traffic.

[Original Story]Authorities in St. Mary Parish believe that very thick fog in the overnight hours contributed to a major crash on U.S. Highway 90 during the overnight hours. In fact, it is believed that at least 10 vehicles were involved in the crash that closed the roadway in both directions for several hours last night and early this morning.

As you can see from the photos above that were posted to the Facebook page of the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Department the fog was indeed quite thick at the accident scene. For a time Highway 90 was closed between Baldwin and Jeanerette as first responders cleared the scene and helped victims involved in the crash.

It was noted in the post from SMSO that the eastbound lanes of Highway 90 were reopened to traffic at about 1:30 this morning. There has been no timetable on when the westbound lanes might be cleared. However, crews are on the scene and hopefully, those lanes of travel can be opened before the morning commute begins in earnest.

A Dense Fog Advisory had been posted for much of Southeastern Louisiana this morning however, that advisory did not include St Mary Parish, but fog really doesn't care about parish lines so I'm sure some of it "leaked over" into the adjacent parishes next to the advised area.

By the way, if you need up to the minute traffic information, especially on situations such as this where roadways or lanes are closed because of a crash I suggest you download our station app. You can find the app in the App Store for Apple and Google Play for Android devices. Just make sure you enable alerts in the app settings and select Breaking News and Traffic.
