Sometimes it seems that we will never get to experience an actual fall day in Louisiana, but hey, we'll take it, as long as we can whip out our gumbo pots during this time of year. Fall is already here, but so far it hasn't gotten below 90 yet, but we are patiently waiting...

According to a Great Smokey Mountains guide, Louisiana's peak fall foliage is at the end of October, which was pretty much on track this year. But let's be honest, it's not really 'fall' until we stop wearing flip flops and shorts. However, I saw a lot of really vivid autumn colors last weekend.

According to Only in Louisiana, here are some great places to view beautiful fall foliage right here in the Bayou State. And FYI, most of them are in north Louisiana, which makes sense. Get ready to road trip it, y'all!

  • Chemin-A-Haut State Park - 14656 State Park Rd, Bastrop - this 503 acre park sits on a bluff overlooking Bayou Bartholomew. It also has playgrounds and tent and RV camping facilities
  • Jimmie Davis State Park - 1209 State Park Rd, Chatham - this beautiful park on Caney Lake also has cabins to rent if your leaf peeping adventure is on a weekend
  • Lake Claiborne State Park - 225 State Park Road, Homer - six trails and gorgeous scenery make this a 'must see' destination for fall colors
  • Lake Bistineau State Park - 103 State Park Rd, Doyline - an equestrian trail and five other nature trails make this a great spot for Louisiana fall sunsets as well
  • North Toledo Bend State Park - 2907 North Toledo Park Road, Zwolle - on one of the country's largest man made reservoirs, this park has over 900 acres to explore during our beautiful fall weather
  • South Toledo Bend State Park - 120 Bald Eagle Road, Anacoco - spectacular views of the waterfront on bluffs overlooking the south side of the reservoir
  • Kisatchie National Forest - seven parishes and 600,000 acres make this a perfect destination for the outdoorsman in all of us
