Calling it the beginning of a long process the St. Landry Parish School Board took a difficult but necessary step in the process of improving education in the parish last night. Much to the dismay of many the board voted to close two schools in the parish at the end of this school year.

The schools, North Elementary, and Southwest Elementary will not hold classes during the 2019/2020 school year. This will mean changes for several hundred students, faculty,  and parents in St. Landry Parish. The process for determining where the students will go to school is already underway.

St. Landry Parish Superintendent of Schools Patrick Jenkins told KATC TV that demographers will get to work almost immediately in redrawing school district lines in the parish.

Once those districts have been drawn and approved by the board then will come the reassignment of teachers and administrators that will be displaced when the two schools shut their doors at the end of the current school year.
