Cajuns Survive A Scare From The Warhawks Of ULM Saturday
Rivalries always bring out the best in both opponents and can certainly elevate the play of an opponent who doesn't have as good of a record. That was absolutely the case when it came to this match-up as the ULM Warhawks fought tooth and nail all the way until the end against the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns. Fortunately, the Cajuns held on late for a 31-30 victory as ULM kicker Jared Porter missed a 35-yard field goal with six seconds remaining.
This was really a grind it out game from the opening possession, it was back and forth whenever the Cajuns would score Monroe would answer and Visa-Versa. The only turnover in this game came on the first drive when ULM was nearing the red zone.
The Warhawks did a pretty good job of containing the running game for the Cajuns and UL was unnaturally bad on third downs in this one (3-14). They were able to make up for it by going 3-4 on fourth downs.
It was senior night and the seniors came up with big plays all night long in critical moments.
Running back Raymond Calais had his usual special impact in this one where he busted the Monroe defense right down the middle before the end of the half and outran the defense for an 83-yard score. That touchdown gave the Cajuns a 21-14 lead heading into the half. In addition, he became just the second player in Cajun football history to record three runs of 80 yards or longer in a season.
Kamar Greenhouse on special teams got a great rush off the edge to affect the missed field goal at the end of the game, Jacques Boudreaux was basically the last man standing at linebacker, and Stevie Artigue made the field goal that would win the game.
Of course, we can't forget about wide receiver Ja'Marcus Bradley who caught four balls for 127 yards and a score.
Here's the entire box score.
Injuries were a big part of this game for Louisiana as they lost linebackers Ferrod Gardner, Joe Dillon, and Lorenzo McCaskill as well as defensive back Percy Butler.
With the win, the Cajuns recorded their tenth victory of the season which is the most ever by a UL football team, they finish the regular season 10-2 overall and 7-1 in the Sun Belt Conference.
What's next for Louisiana is a rematch of last year's Sun Belt Conference Championship game from Boone, NC against the Appalachian State Mountaineers next Saturday, December 7th at 11 a.m.
