Cameron Diaz Says She Stepped Away From Fame to Make Herself ‘Whole’
Self-discovery isn't just reserved for teens going through their emo phase, or college students traveling abroad, or suburban dads going through a midlife crisis. Sometimes, even celebrities need to figure their stuff out.
Cameron Diaz spoke at Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop Wellness Summit on Saturday (June 10), where she explained why she stepped away from Hollywood three years ago.
"I just went, 'I can't really say who I am to myself,' which is a hard thing to face up to. I felt the need to make myself whole," the actress, who last appeared in 2014's Annie, shared.
During her hiatus from Hollywood, Cameron met Good Charlotte musician Benji Madden, who she wed in 2015.
"I think it's a matter of I just hadn't met my husband, you know?" she continued, explaining how Madden was different than her previous boyfriends, who include Justin Timberlake, Alex Rodriguez and Jared Leto.
"I had boyfriends before. And there's a really, really distinct difference between husbands and boyfriends. And I have a husband who is just my partner in life and in everything. Talk about two very different people! We are so different from one another, but we share the same values. We're totally two peas in a pod. We are both just weird enough for each other," Diaz said. "We women are objectified so much. Somehow, my husband has just been able to kind of show me what it's like not to have that be a part of a relationship, and being an equal."
