Chance The Rapper to Give Dillard University Commencement Speech

Chance The Rapper is set to give Dillard University's commencement speech next month in New Orleans.

This will be the university's 82nd commencement speech, and Chance will deliver it in front of 200 students on May 12.

Chance, who just yesterday tweeted "there's something about the name Jesus" was embraced by the university's president largely because of his religious beliefs. Dillard President Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough is known as the Hip Hop Prez on campus and sought Chance for two years.

“He’s not signed but a multiple Grammy winner,” Kimbrough told Billboard, also noting his numerous charitable efforts in the community, like giving away music, Jordans and donating heavily to Chicago schools. “He’s the artist that your grandmother would love.”

Kimbrough said Chance's activism is just icing on the cake.

“The activism is a bonus with Chance,” Kimbrough said. “I thought he made for a great commencement speaker because of his spirit of being entrepreneurial and authentic. But his civic engagement, including encouraging people to vote and willingness to speak out on issues, like his recent opposition to a Heineken ad, are just as paramount.”
