The search for a missing mariner who was tossed overboard during a boating incident that happened about two miles off Cypremort Point on June 19th has been suspended. Officials with the United States Coast Guard made that announcement Sunday afternoon after searching continuously for the missing boater for more than 25 hours.

Lt.Cmdr. Michelle Ferguson, search and rescue mission coordinator at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans issued this statement Sunday afternoon.

After an exhaustive search, the Coast Guard and local partners were unable to locate the missing mariner. The decision to suspend a search is never easy and our thoughts are with the families and loved ones during this very difficult time.

Coast Guard officials say at the time of the incident two people were aboard the watercraft when the boat struck a submerged object. Both occupants were thrown overboard. One of the boaters was able to swim to a nearby oil rig and was rescued. The other boater, described as a 40-year-old white male wearing khaki shorts and a t-shirt was not heard from again.
