Deputy U.S. Marshal Killed Serving Warrant During Alexandria Standoff

A deputy U.S. Marshal was killed Monday afternoon while attempting to serve an arrest warrant on a wanted fugitive in Alexandria, setting off a massive law enforcement response and a tense standoff that lasted for hours before the suspect was taken into custody.

The shooting happened near the intersection of Rutland Road and Moor Road, close to Horseshoe Drive and South MacArthur Drive, according to authorities.

Federal Officer Killed While Serving Arrest Warrant

The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed late Monday that one of its deputy marshals was fatally shot while attempting to apprehend a fugitive.

Following the shooting, the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office, Alexandria Police Department, Louisiana State Police, FBI, and additional federal law enforcement agencies flooded the neighborhood as officers worked to contain the suspect.

Authorities said the standoff lasted approximately three hours before the suspect was taken into custody.

The Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office confirmed the suspect was injured during the incident and transported to a local hospital.

Officials have not released the identity of the deputy marshal, the suspect, or details about the warrant that officers were attempting to serve.

FBI Leading Investigation

The FBI's New Orleans Field Office announced it is leading the federal investigation into what it described as an assault on a federal officer.

In a statement, the agency said:

"The FBI responded to an incident this afternoon in Alexandria with the Alexandria Police Department, Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office, and Louisiana State Police. The FBI is now leading the investigation into an assault on a federal officer."

The agency added that Louisiana State Police is also investigating possible violations of state law and confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Because the investigation remains active, authorities said they are unable to provide additional details at this time.

Neighbors Describe Chaotic Scene

Residents who live near the shooting described hearing multiple rounds of gunfire before heavily armed officers surrounded the area.

One neighbor, who asked not to be identified, said her first instinct was to protect her children.

"I just kept telling them, just get down," she said. "I had them in the room, down. Because I didn't know what was going on."

She said the gunfire came just seconds after officers arrived.

"It just went boom, boom, boom, boom, boom."

Another nearby resident, Louis Means, who works at Tobacco Plus, said the overwhelming police presence made it difficult to understand what was happening.

"It was distracting, man. I couldn't even do my job," Means said.

Community Members Say They Knew The Suspect

Several neighbors told reporters they knew the man involved in the standoff and were shocked by the allegations.

The anonymous neighbor described him as someone who was always friendly.

"He was a good man. He was always in good spirits. So definitely didn't expect this."

Means also said he had previously met the suspect.

"I actually gave him a ride over to Popeye's one day, and he spoke a lot of life into me," he said. "You never would have expected something like this."

Authorities have not confirmed any information about the suspect's background or the charges that led to the arrest warrant.

Community Mourns Fallen Deputy Marshal

The death of the deputy U.S. Marshal has prompted an outpouring of condolences from public officials.

Louisiana State Representative Ed Larvadain III offered sympathy to the officer's family and fellow law enforcement officers.

"I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the family and co-workers of the officer that was killed in the line of duty while trying to catch a wanted fugitive earlier this afternoon," Larvadain said. "May the officer rest in peace, and his family gain strength from all our prayers during their time of bereavement."

Residents also expressed concern over the continued violence affecting the Alexandria community.

"I'm just tired of all the shooting in this city," one resident said. "We need to come together as a community and build from there."

The FBI continues to lead the investigation. Additional information, including the identities of those involved and the circumstances surrounding the warrant service, is expected to be released as investigators continue their work.
