Hip-hop is getting the deep-dive treatment once more. Dissect, a Spotify Studios serialized music podcast, dedicated to breaking down some of hip-hop's most influential albums, returns for its fifth season.

Season 5, which kicked off in October, examines Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN., a Pulitzer Prize-winning fourth studio album. Dissect dives into Kendrick's upbringing in Compton and the spiritual themes that can be found in his early work. The host, Cole Cuchna, connects the dots between Kendrick's 2015 LP, To Pimp a Butterfly, and DAMN. before breaking down the latter album track by track. Many of the show's episodes center on one specific song from DAMN., which won a 2018 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album.

Along with Cuchna, the podcast series co-writer Femi Olutade recently tackled Kanye West's Jesus Is King album as a bonus episode. The two-hour episode takes listeners through each song, including "Every Hour" to "Closed on Sunday," covering the 11-track religious-themed album.

In the past, Dissect has covered many rap and R&B albums including Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly, Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Frank Ocean's Blonde and Channel Orange.

The podcast also features a miniseries dedicated to Lauryn Hill's lauded opus, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

Follow and listen to the Dissect podcast on Spotify. The first nine episodes plus a bonus of Dissect's fifth season, which launched Oct. 1, are available now. Catch up as the season continues.
