Armed Suspect Arrested After Downtown Lafayette Incident
Lafayette Police swiftly responded to a tense situation in Downtown Lafayette late Saturday night (April 25).
Just before 11 p.m., roughly two hours after the festival’s final act, reports began circulating of a disturbance near the 100 block of East Vermilion Street. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as a large crowd gathered and a heated argument broke out between two groups.
Police Confront Armed Suspect
According to Lafayette Police, officers already on foot patrol in the area moved in as the situation escalated. During the altercation, a suspect identified as 19-year-old Jai’Quan Pierre of Crowley allegedly pulled a firearm from his waistband and pointed it toward the crowd.
The action caused panic, with people running from the area in fear for their safety.
In response to what authorities described as an immediate threat, one officer discharged their service weapon. Officials confirmed that no one was struck or injured.
Arrest Made Without Further Incident
Pierre was taken into custody shortly after the weapon was discharged. Police say the arrest was made without further escalation.
He has since been booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on multiple charges, including aggravated assault with a firearm, negligent carrying of a concealed handgun, and terrorizing.

Investigation Underway
As is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings, the officer who fired their weapon has been placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is reviewed.
Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or captured video to contact Lafayette Police or Lafayette Crime Stoppers.
Connection To Gabby Sharp Case
Pierre’s name is one many in Acadiana will recognize. In November 2025, he was one of two men arrested in connection with the case surrounding the death of 18-year-old Gabriella Sharp.
Sharp, a senior at Acadiana High School, was found unresponsive at a convenience store on West Congress Street in the early morning hours of November 1. Despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Pierre was charged at the time with video voyeurism, while another suspect faced a sexual battery charge. Authorities stated then that there was no indication either suspect caused Sharp’s death, which was believed to be medical-related pending further testing.
Festival Continues Safely
Despite the frightening moment, officials emphasize that Downtown Lafayette remains safe as Festival International wraps up its final day.
