High schools in Acadiana are making moves to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

KATC reported that Erath High School will be moving to virtual classes tomorrow (11/13) due to COVID-19. Erath Principal Marc Turner wasn't specific about the number of cases his school is dealing with but sent a letter to parents saying that virtual learning through November 30 would be the best course of action based on data they collected.

As a school, we have adhered to the social distancing protocol. As a community, we must follow the same protocol in order to reduce exposure. We must work together to ensure the safety of our community. To preserve the traditional school setting that we desire and the students need to be successful, we must be aware of the consequences of our actions. Please consider enforcing social distancing protocol, so school and future activities can proceed as planned.

Turner also announced that administrators "believe the entire football team has been exposed" to the virus therefore they will be canceling the remaining two games of their season while the team is on a 14-day quarantine. KATC is also reporting that Opelousas and Loreauville High School have also canceled the rest of their respective football seasons due to COVID.

In a similar move, St. Thomas More has also made the decision to go virtual for the next two weeks after at least nine students tested positive for the coronavirus. The following letter was posted on Facebook.

Parents,
Effective immediately, St. Thomas More will move to a virtual instructional model through November 20. Currently, we have nine students with positive COVID test results; however, this translates to roughly 10% of our student body being quarantined due to close contact.
For the safety of our STM community, we have made this decision in order to mitigate the virus and hopefully reduce the spread. We feel that one week of virtual learning and one week of the Thanksgiving holidays will minimize the number of cases on campus.
Please have your student check their Moodle page tomorrow morning after 9 a.m. for their Friday assignments. These assignments need to be completed before 3 p.m. on Friday, November 13. This is how attendance will be captured. Students will receive an email during the day tomorrow with their virtual schedule and further instructions for next week.
Classes will resume after the Thanksgiving holidays on Monday, November 30.
Sincerely,
STM Administration

Lafayette numbers continue to rise as cases have grown exponentially across the country over the last two weeks.

A recent article posted by The Advocate has raised eyebrows after details suggest that local leadership pulled back on enforcing any COVID-19 mandates on a local level.

Earlier this week Dr. Tina Stefanski with the Louisiana Department of Health said she was aware of the gatherings and parties, warning that those activities already have us on pace to see numbers similar to spikes we had in June of this summer.

Hopefully, the decision to go virtual will help to mitigate the spread and stop the increase of local cases of COVID-19.
