Fantasy Sports Measure Passes In Most Acadiana Parishes
If you enjoy playing "fantasy" sports online and don't mind putting your money where your mouse is then your playing days in Louisiana just got a little closer. Yesterday's election found a majority of voters in most Acadiana parishes were down with the idea of pretend sports being played for real money.
The Fantasy Sports Contest Measure was on the ballot on a parish by parish basis. Voters in Lafayette, St. Martin, St. Landry, Iberia, Acadia, and Vermilion approved the measure. So did voters in Cameron and Calcasieu Parishes. The measure was defeated in Jefferson Davis, Vernon, Beauregard, and Allen Parishes.
All in all voters in 47 of Louisiana's 64 parishes opted "In" on the Fantasy Sports measure. The majority of the parishes that voted "No" on the measure were predominately in North Louisiana.
Now that we the people have spoken on the issue. The state legislature will need to work out how this form of gambling will be regulated and how the state will be compensated for allowing us to spend our own money based on our own beliefs.
There will also be the very complicated issue of how to keep a person who is a resident of a parish that voted "No" from participating in the fantasy games in a neighboring parish that voted "Yes". Sound like a sticky tangled web of money and deceit? Well, our legislature has experience in that department so I am sure they will figure it out.
You can expect the legislature will take fairly quick action on this measure since the parishes that support it have already spoken and there is money to be stolen, er, raised from the taxpayers who like to pretend they are as worthless as powerful and cringe-worthy as Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys.
