Feeding Ducks Bread Makes Them Sick. My Childhood Is Ruined.
Remember when you were a kid and you took your stale bread to Girard Park and fed the ducks? And you felt like you were the best person in the world, because you were giving those poor starving ducks an amazing meal? Yeah, well, it turns out we were all actually ruining their little duck lives one bread crumb at a time.
Twitter user @proudslytherin posted a picture of a sign from her local park and the internet is losing it's mind.
The sign reads:
Thank you for not feeding us bread. Bread makes us ill, as it does not contain the right nutrition or calories to keep us warm for the winter.
Rotting bread pollutes our water and causes nasty surface algae, which kills our fish and gives us diseases. It also makes our water smell.
My 8 year old self is in tears thinking about all of the little ducky deaths I probably caused. There I was just tossing loafs of bread in the water like some duck savior when, in fact, I was a small child duck killer polluting water and giving zero cares. @proudslytherin said it best, "I am a monster".
Now that we all feel like complete jerks for poisoning ducks for 20+ years, I think it's time we make it right by feeding them food that contains the right nutrition and calories so their little ducky bodies will stay warm in the winter. So, what do ducks actually like to eat? According to the same sign that crushed our dreams, ducks would love it if we fed them half cut seedless grapes, cooked rice, birdseed, peas, corn, oats, and chopped lettuce.
So, next time you head to Girard Park to feed the ducks just bring some leftover rice with you. Because, let's be real, we live in Louisiana and rice is life, so I know we all have cooked rice to spare.
