Former Lafayettte Parks Police Chief Oscar Benoit has now accepted a position with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office according to Valerie Ponseti from the Sheriff's Office, via press release.

Benoit retired from his employee with Lafayette in August after their were cutbacks in the budget. Now, Sheriff Mark Garber has announced that Benoit will be their Community Services Outreach Liaison.

Ponseti says that Benoit will have many duties including the following:

  • He will meet with other local officials to collaborate on important issues.
  • He will meet with citizens to work on addressing their needs.
  • He will meet with spiritual leaders to work with different aspects of the community.

Benoit has been the recipient of multiple awards over his career including:

  • He was presented the Keys to the City of Lafayette by former City-Parish President Joey Durel.
  • He was named Man of the Year by the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office
  • He has been named and Officer of the Year by the Magnolia State Peace Officers Association.

His main focus when he served for the city of Lafayette was to maintain security at several dozen parks, and he focuses on safety for everyone.

 

He will be working with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office now like his father once did.

Officials with LPSO have expressed confidence that he will be a stellar addition to a law enforcement entity which aims to continually serve the people of Lafayette Parish.
