Meaning Behind Those Four Cryptic-Looking Biker Waves
Motorcycle season never ends in some states; however, it's everywhere right now, as summer is in full swing across the country.
This is when most motorcycle enthusiasts hit the open road in small groups or big gatherings lasting into the Fall.
Bikers are in a club of their own, even if they don't know each other, and that club includes a private wave.
The two-finger wave is by far the most popular, having originated more than 100 years ago, thanks to William Harley and Arthur Davidson, the founders of Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
2-FINGER BIKER WAVE AND WHAT IT MEANS
According to the Riding Without Reason website, motorcyclists extend their left hand at a 45-degree angle or so below the handlebars, at hip or knee height, and stick out the index and middle fingers like a horizontal peace sign.
This 2-finger wave means "Hey, my two-wheel friend, stay safe and keep two wheels on the ground,'

Low Palm Wave
According to Motor Biscuit, some riders prefer to put their entire palm out instead of two fingers, keeping that same, low height around their hip or knee.
This is a simple, "hello and stay safe."
3-Finger Wave
Meanwhile, 'trikes', which are motorcycles with three wheels, sometimes use a three-finger wave that includes the thumb or ring finger.
This gesture says 'hi and stay safe with all three wheels on the ground' to passing riders in trikes.
Fist Wave
According to the website Big Bike Reviews, when a biker raises a left fist in the air with the elbow bent at 90°, it signifies solidarity and support for social justice causes and the motorcycle culture.
According to Big Bike Reviews, all motorcycle waves are truly a gesture to communicate support and camaraderie, mopeds not included. Sorry.
