A 29-year-old atheist/agnostic bride on Reddit says her religious family is trying to guilt her into having a religious wedding.

"Me and my fiancé are getting married next year. We live in a pretty conservative, mostly Catholic country. I used to be religious, but years of extremely traumatic life experiences in addition to my pro-choice/pro-LGBTQ+ stances turned me into an agnostic/atheist. My fiancé grew up in a religious family, but never actually believed in God. The most logical thing was for us to just get married at the registry office. We also don't plan to christen our future child and will let them choose their religion for themselves," the woman began.

"My grandma is pretty old, but is in good health overall. However, she and my fiancé's family are outraged that we won't have a religious wedding. This will certainly upset my grandma and she keeps saying she might not make it to my wedding if she's too upset (manipulation, I know). She is the only grandparent left though, and it'd be devastating for me if she doesn't attend. The in-laws are also giving us a hard time, not just about that, but also concerning our choice of music, etc.," she continued.

The bride-to-be definitely wants family at her wedding, but not at the expense of her personal beliefs and values.

"We want to have them in our wedding, but I don't feel comfortable going through the motions for the wedding just to please them and I feel like it disrespects her religion to fake it all. My fiancé is swaying a bit because he's a people pleaser and is used to doing things for others just to take them off his back," she shared.

"We will be uncomfortable in both situations as it's ended up being damned if you do, damned if you don't. We simply don't know if this is a hill we want to die on since we're going to keep hearing about it forever," the woman concluded.

People in the comments section sided with the frustrated bride.

"Elope and don't invite anybody. If this is how they behave why on earth would you want that anyway? Do they know you both aren't religious?" one person wrote.

"It's your wedding, your choice, and your beliefs should be respected. Pleasing everyone else would mean sacrificing your values, and that's not fair to you or your fiancé," someone else shared.

"At this rate of everyone being mad at you, I would just do a courthouse wedding. Don't let them have the power of, 'If you don't do this we won't go.' It's your wedding. You have the power to say, 'We'll miss you,' rather than let them decide on the wedding they aren't paying for," another user commented.

Celebrities Who Found Religion

The glitz and glam of fame may appear to be the good life. However, dealing with the trials and tribulations of life all while in the spotlight for the world to see can be a heavy weight to bear. While this is an obstacle all celebrities face, many of our favorite actors, singers and other celebrities have turned to religion to help cope with the pressure of celebrity and find their inner faith.
