(KTDY) - It's no secret, Christmas parties aren't as wild as they once were, but that doesn't mean you can't still have a good time with friends and colleagues.

I don't know if you have noticed, but there aren't as many company Christmas parties these days, and I think it's because guests are much more reserved when out with others, their colleagues.

A couple of years ago, I provided music for an annual company Christmas party that I had DJed for for a few years prior, and for some reason, the party just never got going llike in previous years. I recognized a lot of familiar faces, but the guests just weren't as active as I had seen before.

For a second, I thought it may have been the music, but folks danced, but just not at the level like in previous years. So, I asked some of the guests what the issue was, and some told me that they didn't want to end up on social media.

That's when it hit me: people at Christmas parties are behaving much more now because everyone has a phone with a camera, and many aren't shy about showing the world what's happening where they are. Yes, party goers are much more reserved now because they don't know who is filming and where their actions may end up.

Sadly, many companies have caught on to this, and rather than host a lame and expensive Christmas party for their employees, they are just not hosting gatherings outside of business hours. Instead, many are hosting luncheons at their businesses, and that's it.

As the holidays approach, if you are hosting a Christmas party and want it to be "FUN" again, ask everyone to put their phones away and enjoy themselves for one night out. I can vividly recall DJing Christmas parties that were as much fun as club gigs, because people went out to have a good time and let loose.

Now, in 2025, everyone is afraid to let loose at parties and then be blasted on social media for having fun at the company party. Let me make this clear: I am not saying you should BAN cell phones at a party you may be hosting, but once the party gets going, you should ask guests to put their phones away.

I should add that by putting your phone away at a party, you also eliminate a distraction and allow yourself to engage with friends and colleagues during the holiday season.

I hope this tidbit helps enhance the party you may be hosting this holiday season. Remember, it's ok to have fun with others without documenting every move you or someone else makes while out.
