Crews across Louisiana are heading towards Florida as a major hurricane heads towards the "Sunshine State."

Meteorologists expect Hurricane Helene to be a major storm by the time it makes landfall EAST of Panama City Beach, and with that will come power outage across much of the state of Florida.

A strong cold front approaching Louisiana will steer the storm in the Gulf of Mexico towards Florida and now government agencies there are planning ahead of what could be a catastrophic storm.

When a storm impacts Louisiana you often see power companies from other states here to assist in the restoration process. Now that a major hurricane is expected to impact Florida, crews from Louisiana are returning the favor.

The Lafayette Utilities System dispatched several crew members with a lot of equipment to Florida early Wednesday morning ahead of the storm and they will be close by so that they can move in once the storm has passed through Florida.

Many of these power companies have written agreements on Mutal Aid and this time it's crews from Lafayette responding to assist others.

We hope that crews from across the region reach their destination safely and that they are safe once the restoration process begins. We ask that you keep all of the linemen from our area in your thoughts and prayers as they head toward the storm, and please keep those who live in the area impacted in your thoughts.

Hurricane season is at its peak, and the season does not officially come to an until the end of November.

Here's a look at LUS crew members leaving Lafayette and heading toward Tallahassee, Florida.
