Photos From Commercial Flight Show Louisiana Wildfires From 35,000 Feet

Passengers on a recent flight over Louisiana got to see the many wildfires that are burning across the state. The photo taken as the sun set shows three major fires over southwest Louisiana. The marsh fire in Cameron Parish was apparently no threat to any structures.

There are several fires burning right now and at least one is being investigated as arson.

How You Can Help

The tips below from the National Wildlife Coordinating Group could be key in preventing more fires. But the heat is not over and the risk remains.

1. Follow Local Regulations: Be aware of and adhere to all local laws and regulations regarding fire prevention. This may include burn bans and restrictions on outdoor fires.
2. Maintain Defensible Space: Create a defensible space around your home by clearing away dead vegetation, leaves, and branches. Maintain a buffer zone that is free from flammable materials.
3. Use Fire-Resistant Landscaping: Choose fire-resistant plants and materials for landscaping around your home. This can help create a barrier that slows the spread of fire.
4. Keep Gutters and Roofs Clean: Regularly clean your gutters and roof of leaves, pine needles, and other debris that can easily catch fire from embers.
5. Store Firewood Safely: Keep firewood, propane tanks, and other flammable materials at least 30 feet away from structures and clear of vegetation.
6. Use Fire-Resistant Building Materials: If building or renovating your home, use fire-resistant materials for your roof, siding, and deck. This can greatly reduce the risk of ignition during a wildfire.
7. Practice Safe Campfire Habits: If camping, make fires only in designated areas and follow all campground rules. Keep campfires small and manageable, and always fully extinguish them before leaving.
8. Use Equipment Safely: When operating equipment such as lawnmowers, chainsaws, or vehicles in grassy areas, ensure that they do not produce sparks, and be cautious of hot exhaust components that can ignite dry vegetation.
9. Dispose of Cigarettes Properly: If you smoke, never discard cigarette butts or matches on the ground, especially in dry, grassy areas. Use a proper receptacle for disposal.
10. Be Vigilant on Windy Days: High winds can quickly spread wildfires. On windy days, exercise extra caution when using fire and consider postponing activities that could pose a fire risk.
