(St. John Parish) - Three deputies with the St. John the Baptist Sheriff's Office are being praised after they rescued four people trapped in a car that was submerged in water.

According to a social media post by the Sheriff's Department, the vehicle went into a canal beneath a bridge after it was rear-ended in an accident on I-10.

The crash occurred around 1 a.m. on July 13 at Mile Marker 201.1 just before the Spencer Chauvin Memorial Bridge. When officers arrived on scene, they observed a vehicle that was almost fully submerged in the water.

Without hesitation, the three deputies jumped into action and into the water to break a window in the car so they could pull the occupants from the sinking vehicle.

The good news is that, thanks to their efforts, all four occupants of the car were pulled to safety and high ground, where they received medical attention.

Video footage shows the car in the water, but as officers prepared to enter the water for the daring rescue, they removed their vests, which hold their body cameras. Therefore, you don't see the officers breaking the car window and pulling those out of it.

Louisiana State Police are investigating this crash that sent the vehicle into the water, and I-10 was shut down in Garyville shortly after to allow police and other emergency personnel to clear the scene.
