Dollar General Reveals ‘New Type of Store’ – Here’s What’s Changing

(KMDL-FM) When you think of the popular public retailer Dollar General, what thought comes to mind? We recently conducted a small-sample survey and found the word "clutter" in most responses. The folks at Dollar General's home office must have heard that, too, because they are making changes in the form of some 4,250 store remodels over the next few years.

While a plan to remodel 4,250 stores might seem a bit aggressive, you have to realize that Dollar General operates more than 20,000 locations throughout its 48-state footprint. The state with the most locations is Texas. According to Dollar General press releases, the retailer plans to open an additional 450 stores this calendar year.

How Many Dollar General Stores Are In Louisiana?

Louisiana has, at last count anyway, 615 Dollar General locations. Many of those stores are located in smaller communities or on the outskirts of larger communities. And while we do not have official confirmation from DG on whether any of the Louisiana locations will be included in the massive remodel, it does stand to reason that at least one store in the state will be getting the makeover that, if the remodel is successful, will eventually take place at all stores around the country.

From what we've learned, the changes that Dollar General will be making in its store layout address the "clutter" that we mentioned earlier. In a story published by Retail Dive, the plan is to create a shopping environment that is "more open and inviting" and fosters "greater browsing and treasure hunt shopping".

Those quotes can be attributed to remarks made by Dollar General officials who were discussing the chain's plan for a makeover and remodel with investors on a recent earnings call.

Dollar General To Offer Subscription Program For Shoppers

Dollar General is also looking to introduce a subscription program as part of its marketing strategy. The precise details of what the subscription program would include and the perks it might offer were not revealed. The brand has recently expanded its delivery service in many of the communities it serves.

And while shopping at a "dollar store" always seems to yield a few bargains, you have to remember that not every "bargain" is a result of a low price. And sometimes just because the price is low, that's still not enough of a reason to buy something.
