Hunt or Fish in Louisiana? Why September 28th is Important to You

There are some important dates that should be on the calendar of anyone and everyone who likes to hunt or fish in Louisiana. It doesn't matter whether you're enjoyment of the outdoors includes looking for lunkers in the Atchafalaya Basin, stalking a trophy buck in Caldwell Parish, or shivering in a duck blind in Gueydan, these dates will have an impact on how you define "success" for the 2024/2025 season.

Looking in chronological order the first date you should have noted on your calendar is Friday, September 6th, 2024. That's when Louisiana's "2nd Amendment" Sales Tax Holiday weekend begins. Outdoorsmen will be able to save money on the items they need for the outdoors and not be required to pay state sales tax.

For the list of items that are included in the Tax-Free Weekend, click here. Just as an aside, now is also the time to stock up on things you know you will use during the season. Items like ammunition and certain clothing come to mind. And if you buy in bulk the tax savings this weekend could be large.

The next date of note hunters will want to have on their calendar is September 7th. That would be Saturday. Let me just tell you the weather is going to be great across Louisiana on Saturday and those conditions should make the opening day of Dove Season in Louisiana quite spectacular.

We should note that according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife, Dove season opens statewide on Saturday. But there are some variations on when the season opens and closes based on where you are in the state. For the breakdown on that you can visit the LDWF info page, right here.

September 28th is the final day of note outdoorsmen will need to note in their calendars. September 28th is National Hunting and Fishing Day and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will participate in those activities from four different locations in the state.

Established in the early 1970s National Hunting and Fishing Day has become a tradition in Louisiana. The day's festivities include exhibits and information on research and conservation as well as live demonstrations and important information useful to those who enjoy the outdoors lifestyle.
