New Peanut Butter Recall Affects Over 20,000 Products Nationwide

(KMDL-FM) Stop, before you pack that lunch for your school-age children or even for yourself or your spouse, check the ingredients. The Food and Drug Administration has just revised and ramped up a major recall of a popular food product that is in almost every American household.

The recalled product in question is peanut butter. The reason why the recall has been invigorated with a stronger sense of urgency by the FDA has to do with the scope and scale of the products involved. According to FDA data, more than 20,000 peanut butter products are affected. Those products have been distributed and sold in more than 40 different states.

Why Is There a Class II Recall For Peanut Butter Products?

The recall threat for this particular peanut butter product recall has been established as a Class II. A Class II recall suggests the safety risk involved with using the product may include temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences. That's a fancy way to say if you use the product as suggested, it could make you sick.

Actually, the product itself is not where the concern lies. The peanut butter itself is fine; there are concerns that during the packaging and labeling process, pieces of plastic may have contaminated some of the products. And no, consuming tiny bits of plastic is not good for you.

The recalled products were not sold under a singular brand name. In fact, if you have any peanut butter products that were sold under the following labels, you should consider not using them. The affected products include those produced under the US Foods, DYMA Brands, Flavor Fresh, Gordon Food Service, and Sysco House Recipe labels.

Not all of the products produced and distributed by those brands are affected. Here are the specific product descriptions that are included in the FDA Class II recall notice:

*Creamy peanut butter in 0.5 oz, 0.75 oz, and 1.12 oz packages
*Creamy peanut butter with grape jelly in 2.12 oz packages
*Creamy peanut butter with strawberry jam in 2.12 oz packages

Which States Are Affected by the FDA Peanut Butter Recall?

The list of states in which these products were distributed include Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

The FDA did not offer specific guidance on refund or reimbursement opportunities. They did warn consumers not to use the affected products.
