The Top 12 Alcoholic Drinks in Acadiana – The List

(KMDL-FM) When it comes to drinking, South Louisiana might just have a leg up on the rest of the world. We tend to like our refreshments with a kick, and for us, that kick comes from alcohol. And while beer is by far the alcoholic beverage of choice, several mixed drinks and concoctions have their place in South Louisiana lore as being a “go-to choice” when you’re not drinking beer.  

So we have concocted a list of these concoctions based on conversations with some of our favorite bartenders, booze sellers, liquor store operators, and yes, we queried a few folks who could be considered alcoholics to derive a list of the Dirty Dozen, Acadiana’s most popular mixed drinks and cocktails. 

When South Louisiana Goes Drinking, What Do People Like to Drink

Many of the boozy beverages that made our Top 12 are the kind of drinks you’d expect to see served poolside on a weekend afternoon. Then again, some basic cocktails probably get made “as soon as we get home from work” regularly as well. 

Now, if you're wondering about wine, we didn't include wine in this query because it's too confusing. We also didn't include cough syrup, but sometimes that has just as much alcohol in it as some of these wines do.

Then again, there were a couple of cocktails and mixed drinks that made our “best of” list that are obviously the only kind of thing you’d drink on a special night out. Of course, for some folks in South Louisiana, a special night out could involve a tractor pull or a kids’ dance recital.

There is a very strong chance that if you’ve lived in South Louisiana and you are a drinker, you have sampled about ten of these. There are two on the list that I am not sure I would try, but then again, after a few drinks, our willpower and judgement seem to fly right out the window, don’t they?
