(KMDL-FM) The nation's largest ticket exchange and resale ticket provider has been ordered by the Federal Trade Commission "to make things right" via a settlement that could run in excess of $10 million.

If you've used the ticket resale and exchange service StubHub, you will very likely qualify for some of that settlement money. But there are certain parameters that must be met.

What Did StubHub Do or Not Do According to the FTC?

The Federal Trade Commission, in a news release, said that StubHub violated the FTC guidelines on Unfair or Deceptive Fees. It was alleged by the FTC that the site displayed one price for tickets on its website, but when the final tally came in, and it was time to pay, consumers were paying a higher price.

The FTC regulations state that the total price of live event tickets must be disclosed up-front. The rule is in place so that consumers can make better-informed purchasing decisions. The "nondisclosure of fees" until the very end of the transaction was seen as a breach of this rule.

StubHub was sent a warning letter by the FTC in May of last year. The letter informed the company that the prices displayed on the StubHub website appeared to be in violation of the Fees Rule.

The proposed settlement order has a requirement that StubHub pay $10 million to provide monetary relief to eligible consumers. The order also stipulates that StubHub must stop the deceptive practices at once.

StubHub will have 90 days to provide redress to two groups of consumers, the FTC believes were harmed by the deceptive actions of the ticket resale and exchange site.

Who Is Eligible For StubHub Settlement Refund?

The first group of consumers who would be eligible for "relief" would be those who purchased tickets where the total price of the tickets was not disclosed on initial pricing. The second group of consumers would be those who purchased tickets during the time frame specified by the order.

That specific time frame is between May 12 and May 14, 2025. While that might sound like a small window, it was during that time frame that the NFL was releasing its schedule for the upcoming season, and many ticket purchasers have used the StubHub service for that reason.

Perhaps the best news in this settlement is this: if you were affected by the deceptive practices, the FTC order will require StubHub to reach out to you within 90 days to offer a refund. Those refunds will be made available to you via PayPal if the refund is unable to be transacted on the original form of payment.
