Tater Tot Recall Expanded in Louisiana Over Plastic Contamination

(KMDL-FM) - Another week, another food recall. This time it's an expansion of a recall for tater tots distributed in more than two dozen U.S. states including Louisiana because they may be contaminated with pieces of hard plastic.

Which Products Are Affected

The recalled tater tots came from the firm McCain Foods in Idaho. They were distributed in large quantities to food service clients and include Ore-Ida Tater Tots shaped potatoes and Sonic Tots. According to the Food and Drug Administration recall notice, the tots were not for sale at retail stores.

The FDA announced earlier this week that additional batch codes are now included in the voluntary recall. The products are being recalled due to "foreign materials" as they may contain small, hard plastic fragments.

States Included in the Recall

The new FDA report states that the recalled products were distributed to vendors in 28 states: Alaska, Arkansas, Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin.

What Food Service Operators Should Know

A total of more than 21,600 thirty-pound cases of tater tot products were recalled, totaling around 648,000 pounds that were impacted.
