(KMDL-FM) If you're just sobering up from your New Year's Eve celebration, I have got some bad news for you: the world is still in turmoil. In fact, it may be even more tumultuous today than it was when the calendar flipped over to 2026 on January 1st. How tumultuous are things? Yeah, those changes just happened in the past couple of days, so you can see with military action happening around the globe and even more recent military maneuvers in the Caribbean, travel is a lot more "interesting" and a lot less "relaxing" than it used to be.

What Are The DIfferent Travel Threat Levels and What Do They Mean?

A Level 1 travel advisory simply advises the use of Normal Precautions when visiting destinations with this travel distinction.  A Level 2 travel advisory simply suggests you should exercise increased caution; in other words, don't put yourself in harm's way and be situationally aware.

A Level 3 travel advisory is when the State Department encourages you to rethink your travel plans and perhaps plan your trip for a different time when conditions at your destination are not so volatile. And you've probably figured out a Level 4 advisory is simply this: Do Not Travel to that destination.

In previous years, when tensions weren't so high, about half a million to one million American visitors would visit Russia annually. That number has dropped off significantly since the conflict with Ukraine began and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

What Countries Are Americans Discouraged from Traveling to?

So, Russia is off the table for travel in the near future. Other countries on the State Department’s “Do Not Travel” list include Afghanistan, Belarus, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Niger, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Ukraine.

Oh, and if you had travel plans to the nations of Mali and Burkina Faso, yes, that's a country, you can't go if you're an American. American tourists have been banned from traveling to those nations. The tourism ban is in response to a similar ban the United States enacted on those nations last December.
