Attention Louisiana parents, there has been an important safety recall that involves the Gerber brand and retail outlets such as Walmart, Target, and Publix. Needless to say this is a recall notice that parents from Shreveport to Grand Isle and Tallulah to Lake Charles and all Louisiana communities, large and small, need to be cognizant of.

The recall is so expansive that Walmart, which usually posts a list of affected stores when a product recall has been issued has simply gone with a blanket statement of "All Walmart Stores". What is even more concerning for Louisiana parents and grandparents is the fact that the recall not only covers all of  Louisiana but 44 other states and Puerto Rico.

Even more concerning is the fact that the product that prompted the recall comes from the Gerber Corporation. That company has been iconic in the safe production of baby foods and other baby products for nearly a century. The Gerber company got its start in 1927 when Daniel Frank Gerber founded the company after he and his wife Dorothy were advised to hand-strain food for their infant daughter at the time.

The product in question is the Gerber Brand Soothe N Chew Teething Sticks. The products in all batches including strawberry, apple, and banana flavors have been recalled because of a choking hazard. From what we understand at least one child required emergency room treatment after choking on the product.

Here is the official recall notice as provided by the Food and Drug Administration.

The products should no longer be on store shelves so the focus of the recall is to remind consumers to check the items they already have in their homes. If you do have any of the recalled items do not give them to your child. You may return the unused portion of the product to where it was purchased for a full refund.

If you have questions about the recall or a product that you feel might be a part of the recall Gerber has set up a hotline number. 1-800-443-7237. The company is cooperating fully with the FDA and retailers to ensure the safety of consumers.
