A St. Martinville man died over the weekend after being struck by a vehicle on Sunday evening on Louisiana Highway 353 near Lake Martin in St. Martin Parish.

On March 30, 2025, shortly before 8:00 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop I investigated the single-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on Highway 353 just north of Rookery Road.

The crash claimed the life of 44-year-old Brad Madere of St. Martinville.

What happened in the fatal pedestrian crash near Lake Martin?

According to the preliminary investigation, Madere was walking on LA Hwy 353 near the southbound fog line. At the same time, a 2019 Ram 1500, driven by 58-year-old Troy Alfred of Lafayette, was traveling south on LA Hwy 353.

For unknown reasons, which are still under investigation, Madere entered the southbound lane as the truck approached. Despite the driver's evasive action to avoid a collision, Madere was struck.

Madere suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Alfred was properly restrained and did not suffer any injuries in the crash.

Impairment suspected in the crash

Alfred provided a breath sample following the crash, and it revealed a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit.

He was processed into the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center on the following charges:

  • LA RS 14:98 - Driving While Impaired (1st Offense)
  • LA RS 32:361.1 - Obstructed View Through Windshield/Windows

A standard toxicology sample was also collected from Madere and submitted for analysis.

The crash remains under investigation.

This is the second pedestrian killed by a vehicle in St. Martin Parish in the last week or so.

You may recall that on March 24, 2025, an elderly Breaux Bridge man was killed following an early morning hit-and-run in Breaux Bridge.

86-year-old Charles Leblanc was struck and killed by a vehicle in the 2600 block of Doyle Melancon Road.

The suspect and/or suspect vehicle have not yet been identified.
