A tragic two-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 146 claimed the life of a young child and left another seriously injured on Saturday (Sep. 28). According to Louisiana State Police, impairment is suspected to be a factor in the incident.

The crash occurred around 3:45 p.m. near Public Boat Ramp Road, involving a 2015 Toyota SUV driven by 31-year-old Jordan Burton of Homer, and a 2014 Dodge Ram. Preliminary investigations indicate that Burton's SUV was traveling westbound when it crossed the centerline and collided with the oncoming Dodge Ram, which was traveling eastbound.

Burton, who was properly restrained, sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Tragically, a 5-year-old child, who was improperly restrained in the rear seat of the Toyota, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. A 10-year-old child, also improperly restrained in the front passenger seat, was severely injured and taken to the hospital for emergency care.

The driver of the Dodge Ram, who was properly restrained, sustained minor injuries and was also treated at a nearby hospital.

State police suspect that impairment may have played a role in the crash, and toxicology samples have been taken from both drivers for analysis. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have indicated that charges may be pending.

Louisiana State Police are using this tragedy as a reminder of the importance of road safety and following proper restraint protocols. Troopers urge all motorists to avoid driving while impaired, fatigued, or distracted. Louisiana law mandates that every occupant of a vehicle, regardless of their seating position, must be properly restrained at all times.

"Taking simple precautions, like ensuring proper restraints for all passengers, can mean the difference between life and death," said Trooper Eddie Thomas.
